Joey Chestnut Relishes Third Straight Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Championship

Coney Island, NY-  Joey Chestnut broke his own world record by eating 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes to capture the 2009 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

On a beautiful July 4th holiday, with “The Star Spangled Banner” playing in the background, the Californian beat Japanese superstar Takeru Kobayashi by four hot dogs. American Patrick Bertoletti was a distant (but impressive) third with 55 hot dogs consumed.

“This is great," Chestnut told ESPN, which broadcast the 10-minute contest live. "After the second minute, I knew that my body was cooperating and it was going to be hard to beat me."

To put Chestnut’s accomplishment into perspective, the first Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champion ate a mere 13 dogs (in 1916) and, even as recently as 2000, the winner ate only 25 hot dogs.
