Best Supporting Actor Winner Christoph Waltz
Los Angeles (January 23, 2010)- The fantasy feel-good movie of the year… no, not Avitar… Inglorious Basterds took the top honors at the Screen Actors Guild awards- Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
The award adds some fuel to the Oscar speculation that the Quentin Tarantino re-write of Nazi-era history has a legitimate shot at a Best Picture slot. Avatar, which took top honors at last weeks’ Golden Globe’s was pretty much shut out at the SAGs.
Eli Roth, speaking on behalf of "Basterds" ensemble, praised Tarantino for "plucking actors from around the globe, including the Fangoria convention, and giving them a chance to shine."
Fellow cast member Christoph Waltz- who played a decidedly evil Nazi- appears to be a Best Supporting Actor lock for the Oscars after taking the same honor at the SAGs and Golden Globes.
“It’s nice to be an overnight sensation after so many years,” the Austrian actor said.
In the acting categories, Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock took top homors for their starring roles in dramas ("Crazy Heart" and "The Blind Side," respectively). Coupled with their wins in last Sunday's Golden Globes, both actors are heavy favorites for Oscars.
"This means so much to be acknowledged like this by my acting family," Bridges said. "I love being an actor, pretending to be other people."
Another apparent Oscar shoo-in is Mo'Nique who won in the supporting actress category for her performance as a cruel, abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire.

Kathryn Bigelow's war drama, "The Hurt Locker," had won the Film Critics’ award for Best Picture, but failed to win any SAG awards.
On the TV side, the cast of "Mad Men" won for ensemble in a dramatic series (to go along witheir Golden Globe victory). Michael C. Hall also repeated, winning male actor in a drama series for "Dexter." Other Golden Globe winners who won at the SAGs included Julianna Margulies for "The Good Wife"; Fox's "Glee," about stage-struck teens at an Ohio high school, for outstanding ensemble in a comedy series; and Alec Baldwin for male actor in a comedy series.
